Definition

Thermal Decomposition

When a decomposition reaction is carried out by heating, it is called thermal decomposition.

Examples

  • Ferrous Sulphate to Ferric Oxide and Sulphur Dioxide and Sulphur Trioxide
  • Calcium Carbonate (Limestone) to Calcium Oxide and Carbon Dioxide
  • Lead Nitrate to Lead Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide + Oxygen

Electrolysis Decomposition

When a decomposition reaction is carried out by electricity, it is called elctrolysis.

Example

Photochemical Decomposition

When a decomposition reaction is carried out by light energy, it is called photochemical decomposition.

Examples

  • Silver Chloride to Silver and Chlorine
  • Silver Bromide to Silver and Bromine
