There are two types of federations, namely:

Coming Together

  • Independent states come together to form a country.
  • States have equal power.
  • State and Central Govt. have equal power.
  • Example: USA, Switzerland, Australia.

Holding Together

  • A large country is divides power in state and central govt.
  • States have unequal power
  • State and Central Govt. have unequal power (Central is more powerful.)
  • Example: India, Spain, Belgium.
