Simile ? A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as.” Example: “Her smile was as bright as the sun.”
Metaphor ? A metaphor is a direct comparison between two unrelated things, suggesting that they are alike in some way. Example: “The world is a stage.”
Personification ? Personification attributes human characteristics to non-human objects or animals. Example: “The wind whispered through the trees.”
Alliteration ? Alliteration is the repetition of the same initial consonant sounds in a series of words. Example: “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”
Assonance ? Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words in close proximity. Example: “The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.”
Consonance ? Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds within or at the end of words. Example: “Pitter-patter of raindrops.”
Onomatopoeia ? Onomatopoeia uses words that imitate the sound they represent. Example: “Buzzing bees filled the garden.”
Hyperbole ? Hyperbole involves exaggeration for emphasis or effect. Example: “I’ve told you a million times!”
Irony ? Irony is a contrast between expectation and reality, often with a humorous or dramatic effect. Example: “The fire station burned down.”
Oxymoron ? An oxymoron is a combination of contradictory or opposing words. Example: “Jumbo shrimp.”
Enjambment ? Enjambment occurs when a line of poetry continues to the next line without a pause or punctuation. Example: “I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills.”
Synecdoche ? Synecdoche uses a part of something to represent the whole or the whole to represent a part. Example: “All hands on deck.”
Rhyme ? Rhyme is the repetition of similar sounds at the end of words. Example: “She sells seashells by the seashore.”
Rhythm ? Rhythm is the pattern of beats or stresses in a line of poetry. Example: “How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, In the icy air of night!”
Imagery ? Imagery uses vivid and descriptive language to create sensory experiences for the reader. Example: “The crimson sunset painted the sky.”
Anaphora ? When the starting words of two or more lines are the same Example: “What will he do? What will she do?”
